I couldn't make this up

Post by Lori on Tue May 01, 2012 3:47 pm

We got back last night from Orlando so I've been trying to get caught up on calls, laundry etc. So this afternoon I headed into town to pick up my mail and stop the mail hold. I didn't get far and a neighbor waved me down. He said another neighbor woman was stuck in the mud and he needed help. He had a ladder with him and the look of panic on his face told me it was serious.

This poor woman had been stuck and struggling for an hour or two, all she really knew was that she'd left the house at about 11:40. It's still cold here, and we have the windows closed so I never heard her cry for help. She was exhausted, and we had to physically drag each limb out and try to bring her onto the ladder while staying on the ladder ourselves. Then we had to try to get her up onto solid ground by helping her scoot back bit by bit. When we got her back far enough we helped her flip into a semi-seated position on firm ground. Long story short, we got her back to her house and into her garage. He left and I helped her strip down to nothing and got her in the shower. She was. Hulled do bad I kept asking her if the water was too hot and she kept saying no, it felt good, but I finally told her I didn't think she could tell how hot it was and I turned it down.

This was so scary, her husband wasn't home and nobody knew where she was. I may just start carrying my cell phone in a pocket. I didn't even have it in my car with me when I was headed into town.

Thank goodness he heard her and that she still had the strength to hold her head above water/mud level. She had both arms and legs under and was sort of half on her side and half on her back and just could not move. She kept saying that she'd call a little and then cry a little but was just so tired. Poor thing.

I live on Lake Huron. The water levels have dropped a lot in the past 10-15 years, and what used to be a calf-high shallow sandbar is now above the water line. It's creating an extremely marshy area that is depositing a lot of yuckiness that is slowly forming dry land. The thing is, much of it looks solid but you find out when you step on it that you'll sink right down into it. So she stepped and her foot was caught. She got thrown off balance and ended up on hands and knees and just couldn't get out. The more she struggled the worse she got coated in that heavy mud. Her coat (she didn't want it off because she was so cold and shivering) was extremely heavy, entirely covered in wet mud, as we're all of her clothes, and her rubber boots were filled with mud and water. I can see this happening so easily. As to what she was doing, she said she was just sort of standing around eating a stupid cracker.

OMG sounds like something on the Travel Channel "scary episodes" ( I realize there is no such show, but her experience definitely sounds like a pilot show.) Glad you and the other were able to rescuse her, and I'm pretty sure she appreciated you helping her to shower and clean up....God Bless You Lori !

She was very grateful and very embarrassed as you can imagine. I can't even guess how long I'd struggle on my own before actually yelling for help.

Wow, glad she is ok. We have patches of Quick sand here, and it's not nice to get into.
