I made 2 batches of jelly today

Post by Lori on Sun Nov 07, 2010 2:24 pm

I had bought 2 pommelos at Meijer yesterday, so first thing this morning, I tried a Pommelo-Lime Marmalade. Not sure if I really love it, at least from the tiny bits I could find to taste. I wanted to get 6 half pints out of it, so really scraped down the pan. A pommelo is like a grapefruit, but lots bigger. The rind is very thick, so there's not as much edible fruit inside as you think there's going to be.

I just finished up a red and green pepper jelly. These will probably be Christmas gifts. I got 7 half pints of pepper jelly.

Mmm..I miss my mom's homemade Strawberry Jam. She used to make it with wild picked field berries. I've had jam made by other people since then, but they use the cultivated berries you find in the store and it just does not taste the same...

I just tried those pommelo's at the store the other day. I had NEVER seen them before! Do you have them from a tree? They were expensive at my store!

No, we don't have any citrus trees in Michigan. Smile They come from Asia. I paid $4 for the 2 that I bought. It was an impulse purchase. When I read the tag that told about them it said they were best in jams and jellies because they're bitter like a grapefruit.

It actually used to be a really common fundraiser for school groups, usually the band, to sell crates of citrus fruit. I always ordered both oranges and grapefruit. They WILL get eaten around here. I haven't bought any citrus in a while now. They cost about $1 each for an orange here, or on sale, maybe 3 for $2. Plus, my husband has this thing where he can't eat just one orange, it has to be 2. I wish I could find a great price on them. I'd stock up.

I got them at the grocery, gave a bunch to my neighbor, she is old and on a fixed income, so I share with her when I have extra of anything.
I have 3 orange trees in the backyard, 1 made tons, but we had no rain for several months and when it did rain they all split, I probably have 1000 lbs of split oranges out there.. The other 2 haven't done good since the Hurricane, so i am planning on cutting them down. I am also planning on raiding my Dad's Satsuma tree, it was loaded when i went by there the other day, so hopefully the neighbors haven't stolen them all, and I can get some this weekend. ( he has alot of Vietnamese neighbors, and they honestly think nothing of taking whatever, whenever, especially the older people)
