Spondylolisthesis

Post by Lori on Wed Jun 30, 2010 11:28 am

I finally broke down and called the Dr. for my back/leg/hip pain, which dates back to Memorial Day. I couldn't get in until Friday, so I broke down and called a Chiropractor. She took xrays and diagnosed Spondylolisthesis, or slippage of the spine. It looks like only a Grade 1, meaning that it has only slipped 1/4 of the width of the spine, but I am telling you, it's just about killing me. My hamstrings are constantly tight like they're cramping, I can't bend down, I can't sit without pain. I'm supposed to go to the hospital for one more xray, but I'm putting it off because I know there's going to be an awful wait. Plus, I need to get in the car to get there.

Today is really the first day I've cried about it, and you'd think that if I could stand it for a month I could stand it for a little longer. It's just worn me down. I'm not a complainer. I have managed to do what needs to be done for a month, but twice yesterday I just gave up on reaching for things that were at ground level. I folded a quilt up and when I flipped it onto the back of the couch it made just enough breeze to blow some papers down that were sitting on the bookcase behind it. I tried 3 times to bend down and retrieve them, and finally just walked away. And I was walking around the yard and made a small attempt at picking a couple of weeds, but again...screw it.

I'm assuming that I'll get my butt to the hospital at some point t oday, and tomorrow I'm supposed to see the chiropractor again. I don't expect any relief, but it makes me feel like I'm moving towards some sort of treatment. Bleah. Sad

That sounds extremely painful, and I hope they can find something to fix it soon. Ouch!

Ok this is really odd, but I have been having about the same problem for about the same amount of time. I thought I was improving, but I shopped for 4 hours yesterday and I am crying today Sad I don't have insurance, so I have not gone to the doctor myself. I would caution you about diagnosis from xrays a chiropractor took. I have had back surgery before for a herniated disc. I started with a chiropractor and he had an entire story for me about my hip being out of place from blah blah blah. When I eventually saw a neurosurgeon, he said it was all made up as the quality of the xray was poor.
I think I have an injury to the muscles in my thigh from the neighbor's dog jumping on me from behind. Those injuries take a long time to heal, so I am back on the sofa resting again. However, I am going to look up some info on this, just in case that is what has happened to me also.
I hope you feel better soon Lori

At least I have insurance coverage, kleenaechs. I hope you feel better soon so you don't have to invest a lot of money in specialists. Ideally, it would heal on its own. I gave it more than enough time, I knew it wasn't muscular in my case. I injured myself when I moved 3 of those huge planters out from behind the garage on Memorial Day. They were way too heavy to carry, so I did that thing where you bend over, hold the rim of the planter and twist it back and forth along the bottom edge so it moves forward a little at a time. It did hurt my back, and at one point I got a dolly from the garage to set the planter on so I could just roll it....but the planters were shaped so it wouldn't sit on the dolly because they angled in. I'm so pissed because I did this to myself.

I just got back from the hospital. They took 5 or 6 xrays, when I was expecting one, but oh, well, the more the merrier. I looked at the xrays with the chiropractor, and it's fairly obvious that a portion of the spine has slipped forward. After looking at the xrays together, she showed me illustrations in a medical book that illustrated Grade 1 - Grade 3 slippages. I looked up information on the condition and all of my symptoms are identical to what is explained.

I'm continuing to have a bad (sad) day I was ready to walk out the door to go to the hospital earlier, and the phone rang. I got weepy with DS on the phone and had to pull myself together again so I could make another try at getting out the door. Then my dad emailed me in response to what I told him about my condition. He went on about how many people were depending on me. Like I don't realize that and stress about it every day (it really sucks when you have 3 generations dependent on you).

I'm really sorry to hear of your pain/condition, but really want to caution you about agreeing to any surgery. I've heard horror stories from people I know.

I had a serious back pain about 20 years ago... my DO wanted to send me to a neurosurgen, but thought long and hard before agreeing, asked him for a referral to a chiropractor and he gave that to me... I saw Doc George for about a year, 3 treatments a week and an exercise regiment... it help immensly.

granted, I didn' thave the slippage you're talking about, so perhaps chiropractory (?) won't be able to help... just don't make any rash decisions, back surgery is major... and sometimes it works, and sometimes, well, sorry, it doesn't.

But I feel so bad for you, the pain you're experiencing, and of course, Dad's comments about everyone depending on you, sure don't help, do they?

Re: Spondylolisthesis

Post by Lori on Fri Jul 09, 2010 11:06 am

Sorry I forgot to update this!

I am doing better than ever. I am now a true believer in chiropractic care. Last Wed was a bad, bad, day, but later in the evening I thought I was feeling a little better. Thursday I felt 90% better, and I saw the Chiropractor that day, too. By the time I saw my regular Dr. on Friday, the only reason I was there was because DH has been on my back about my blood pressure (I got a warning the last time I donated blood). I said no I didn't think I needed any muscle relaxants and no I didn't need a prescription anti-inflammatory. And the additional xrays I had taken at the hospital just showed some arthritis starting in the vertebral area.

I saw the Chiropractor again on Monday and she was thrilled with how well I was doing. So was I! I told her I hadn't even been icing my back because I just didn't have any discomfort. I'll see her again on the 16th for a final check.

I must have missed this thread in all my comings and goings. I'm so sorry to hear that you guys aren't/weren't doing well. My husband Scott has had great luck with chiropractors. I've been fortunate enough not to need one but I can attest to how much of a relief they provide for him. He hasn't been in some time but he had an injury as a teen that healed wrong and has caused him problems over the years. Regular doctors want to give him muscle relaxants and narcotics. But chiropractors actually treated the problem.

I'm so happy you're doing better Lori, and really hoping you find relief soon, Kleenaechs.
