Post by chelle on Thu May 13, 2010 11:21 pm

okay- I had to post this one, cause y'all had so many ideas Smile

I am not happy with it. and I am sure I will change it before 8am... thats when I leave with it.

this took 12 cake mixes, 36 eggs, a box of graham crackers, 7 batches of piping gel, 6 batches of butter cream. (which is 12 pounds of powdered sugar and 6 sticks of butter, 9 cups of crisco) 3 batches of fondant (3 bags marshmellows, 6 pounds powdered sugar) and 3 batches of gumpaste (is a pound each) and a box of a half of rice crispies, (another 3 bags of marshmellows).

Re: luau cake

Post by chelle on Fri May 14, 2010 12:08 am

She needed a cake for 40 people. its for a 13th birthday party, I dont belive in a 1X2X3 inch slice is a peice of cake, its just enough to piss you off, and I had too much shit made to put on a smaller cake. LOL By all accounts, (or by wilton) a 11X15 inch cake (2 layer) should feed 60 people. I made 6 11X15's. (3 2 layer cakes laid side by side) of course, I am the type of person who cooks enough for 3 meals at one meal. I dont cook 6 porkchops cause there are 6 of us. I cook 14, you eat what you want, and we have leftovers. Smile LOL I was just raised that if you leave hungry, its cause you were too dumb to eat. and I reckon I feel the same about cake! LOL

Its a two layer, on a peice of foamboard. I dont know the demintions of the foam board-- I'll have to check that. and thanks Smile

Chelle! That is amazing! I would never have the nerve to try anything that complex and detailed. The wood looks real! And I love how you added all those details like the flip flops and flower lei and the shells and starfish. It's just incredible! How long did it take you? And once you account for all your ingredients, will you make good money for it? It's definitely worthy of a premium price.

Post by chelle on Fri May 14, 2010 12:52 am

Thank you dee Smile

Karen, thank you Smile There was SOOO much more I thought about and wanted to put on it- but didnt have room or time. LOL

and I dont know- LOL I wont make much- unless she leaves me a big tip Smile I'll see tomorrow when I do the math and then get paid. LOL

I started the decorations a week ago. and one day I worked from about 7:30 till after 5:30 - just making the bamboo and the torches.

Other days I worked anywhere from 4-7 hours a day on differnt things. I didnt work at all on 2 differnt days. So, about 30 or so hours. plus it took a full day to bake the cakes (taking one out, putting another in)- and while I did that I hand painted what needed it and made the buttercreams. Plus today, which took all day to put it together. I started around 7 and stopped after 8. I did stop to eat supper and helped brett cook a little, but not much. (fried pork chops, taters, greenbeans, and I made biscuts and gravy- since noone else can.. LOL )

the hut wasnt as bad as I thought, it was actually easier than I fiqured it would be to stick all the bamboo on the hut.

I think my favorites are the sunglasses and the shark.

I did try coral, but it didnt show up good. My water was too dark... Sad I should have used two differnt colors piping gel...

Re: luau cake

Post by chelle on Fri May 14, 2010 6:11 pm

Thank you connie, Lori and Tara!!

Erin, I just rolled out the fondant (colored) and then free cut the first one, and used it for a guide on the next three. Then I cut out a Y out of thinner gumpaste, (really thin) and got the shape I wanted. since it was soo thin about about 20 minutes it was almost set and I 'glued' them down to the flops.

The glue was just a pinch of gumpaste (about the size of a dip) put in hot water to melt (maybe a tablespoon or two) . It makes a great glue.

I have made a volcano before- very easy. I just used a pyrex bowl.

if you dont want to put real 'smoke' in there, use some florist wire, stick it in there and put red fondant on it. sticking strait up.. then dribble red piping gel down the side.

OR drive to Jasper and I'll make your cake ;-) LOL

I asked 80.00 for the cake. but explained to her that if anyone asked, it was a 140-150 dollar cake.

she took one look at it, got her wallet and gave me 140.00.

techinacally, if I was going 'per serving' and my perserving price is really cheap it would have been a 300.00 cake. then all the gumpaste stuff would have been extra.
of course, for that you have to have a market, and a storefront. Of which i have neither.
But I did get 2 new clients today Smile

and to top it all off, my piping gel for the water slid SMOOTH off the cake. liek I had turned a just cooked pizza sideways.

I had to deliver the cake, go buy the stuff and go to a friends house and make some more. It still didnt look good. and I was heartbroken.. just heartbroken... still am.

She wasnt mad though- said she talked to her sister - who makes cakes, and that she had confirmed what I said about humidity and heat, and such messing with your frosting/gels/ fondants etc. I still felt SOOO bad..

Chelle, the same thing happened when I used jello on a cake. It stayed great while it was cold. Slid right off when it got warmer. I ended up cutting a hole in the cake so there would be a ridge of cake around the water. It was the only way to make it stay.

I'm glad she gave you $140. That was a huge tip but you deserved every penny of it. And if you keep picking up clients you'll need to make fair wages for all that work. If you don't you'll end up resenting doing it.
