Hoovers jumbled smooshed up cake

Post by chelle on Sun Apr 25, 2010 9:17 pm

Hoover wanted a cake that had his hunting blind on it, its like a pop up tent that camo. and he wanted my uncle geralds pond where we fish sometimes. I didnt want to make another 3ft by 5ft cake, we never eat them all. So I had to smush it all on a smaller cake. Still more than we will eat, but its there.

I also cant write worth crap, So, I opted for a sign. Smile
Everything is edible. (thats always my goal)
the trees are inverted icecream cones covered in buttercream, the trunks were pretzels covered in fondant.
The sign, gun, fishing tackle, worms, worm box, bobber, dock, etc were all gumpaste/fondant and then handpainted.

the fishing line is gelatin

The water is piping gel over buttercream. and the blind is an individual cake covered in handpanted fondant.

Chelle, quit putting yourself down, you do amazinG cakes... the details, so impressive, I mean you make those rifles, fishing rods, frogs, dragonglies, baseball mitts, etc with eatible play dough,.... I would never have those vsions or desire to go the extremes you do.... you ARE a PROFESSIONAL and need to charge professional prices for those cakes you make out side your 'immediate' family (I'm talkng DH and kddos~)

Me? I haven't made any in a while...I had fun with it..but it stopped being fun when people kept changing what they wanted every day. I swear SIL would say my nephews wanted a certain thing and then the next day they would change their mind..it was like that all of the time. I didn't put myself out there enough either. I will probably do some more eventually. Those nephews do have birthdays this fall..(if they don't want something totally impossible or change their minds 20 times). My favorite ones I made have to be the pumpkin, firehat, Homer, Kenny, and Stewie cakes. It was hard work...took a lot of time and cuss words, but it's definitely worth it to see the finished product and see the birthday boy/girl light up when they see the cake isn't it chelle? Your stuff is great!

I agree with Tara. Leave all the fancy wedding cake techniques to someone else. Your cakes have real down-home flair and charm, Chelle. You can fill that niche really well, learning as you go. Everyone loves a unique birthday cake and it's hard to find someone who can do cakes for men and boys so well.

Kelly, paying customers are so much better than unappreciative relatives. They don't think a thing about imposing and probably have no idea of the prep work and research involved. I mean, when someone asks you to do something for them you want to do your best, and put a ton of research into coming up with a design as soon as they ask you. Pride is involved and yo don't want to wait till the last minute to buy your supplies. It's not like you have a shop and can pull stuff out of the back room when a customer gets flakey.

You should sell some cakes and then tell family that you need lots of time to fit them in and then no changes will be allowed. Tell them not to even ask until they've decided. If the kid wants kitty cats on Monday when they ask you, the kid will have a kitty cat cake on his birthday.

THanks Smile

They do classes in Lufkin, about an hour away- your right, if I could just watch youtube I'd learn alot. Smile and I could watch clay sculptures, and learn how to do that.

I love it, I love researching and fiqureing out ways to make a cake, that doesnt look like a cake, or like its made from other food stuffs (like the pretzels, they were brown, I could have left them like that, but didnt want you to see 'pretzels' on my cake. ) I like learning to make the differnt stuff.

BUT, I did find a way to not ruin my cakes by writing on them, just put a sign on them. Fiqureing out how to make the signs match the cake will be hard sometimes, but I think it will look better than my atrocious (sp) handwriting. LOL

I bet he loved it. You did such a great job. And I like that you were able to fit it onto a smaller board. I don't like doing a huge cake because then I snack on the leftovers.
